RAAC Sustainability Initiatives
Mitigating the risk of RAAC is vital. But our sustainable approach means it never comes at the cost of the environment.
Construction is carbon-intensive. Our remediation solutions aren’t
The buildings and construction sector is the single biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for 37% of total global emissions. We do everything possible to reduce carbon emissions when remediating RAAC using a combination of innovative solutions and efficient construction techniques.
Cutting carbon with efficient and effective RAAC remediation
Sustainability underpins our entire approach to RAAC mitigation. Where remediation is necessary, we apply a range of low-carbon, efficient strategies which minimise cost, disruption and on-site waste. These solutions include:
- Interim safety measures, which include Acrow props and crash decks.
- Structural solutions like timber struts, steel beams and end bearing support.
- RAAC Lift™, a pioneering solution that solves the challenges of RAAC plank deflection.
Meeting the hierarchy of net zero design
Everything we do at RCS is designed to align with the hierarchy of net zero design as outlined by the Institution of Structural Engineers. We aim to mitigate the risk of RAAC by doing as little damage as possible to the environment.
Can we build nothing?
We mean it when we say we do as little as possible. Through a combination of structural assessments, options appraisal and ongoing monitoring, we have been able to leave RAAC alone in multiple cases.
This approach, which is fully in line with the latest scientific research from Loughborough University, delivers significant benefits while fully mitigating risk:
- Ongoing monitoring supporting continued safety
- The most cost-effective and sustainable solution possible
- Absolutely no disruption to operations aside from non-invasive inspections
